It could be that other processes are hogging too much memory. To check, hit Control, Alternate, Delete (Ctrl, Alt, Del or Delete) and hold (one time only, not two as when you want to reboot).
Now (under XP) click on the Processes tab. Click Mem Usage once or twice at the top until the largest numbers appear at the top. Each line shows the amount of memory in use by the program or process named under Image Name on the left.
If any of these relate to programs you have installed but don't need, uninstalling them should help your performance.
