Ubuntu Linux 6.06 the "Dapper Drake" is a great Linux OS for every user and it's totally free, even the shipping! You get no less than five CDs, that's five copies, of the version of the distro that's right for you (desktop, 64-bit or Mac) and you pay nothing. Shipping takes about six weeks.
You can boot from the CD and install using the install icon on the desktop. For those who could use some help, instructions can be found all over Google, for example these at
Ubuntu Guide.
I'm using Ubuntu on a custom box with a 768 processor, 256 MB RAM and a 20GB HDD with no problems. For fastest surfing, skip Firefox and use Epiphany as your Web browser.
You'll find hundreds of updates waiting for you once you install, but you can uncheck the ones you don't need before installing to save on resources or simply not install them at all.
Evolution email is available and my choice on this system so far. The system comes with adequate graphics viewers and editors and OpenOffice so you can use and create files and documents.
Obviously, Ubuntu enables you to keep that old computer and make use of it rather than purchasing an expensive upgrade.
