Windows 2000 is going the way of 95 and 98. At the end of five years, Microsoft operating systems are no longer supported but for critical security updates. Why? To force you to purchase their latest operating system if you haven't already done so.
The good news for home users is that you can probably still work with Windows 2000 - if that's what came with your system – until your system goes belly up, in which case your new computer will probably come with the latest OS, making that upgrade a zero added expense.
In fact, the cost of new computers is dropping so far that you will be able to replace that computer you bought new for $1,000.00 to $2,000.00 with a much sleeker faster box for under $500 (Dell offers some great examples).
If, in addition to keeping up with those critical security updates you can get, you also secure around your machine with an external hardware firewall and an onboard software firewall, anti-virus protection, anti-spyware and other protection, you should be safe from all harm, assuming you know what not to open in your e-mail and where not to surf on the net (no porn, no freebie this and that sites, etc, which are fraught with exploits).
You should still be able to upgrade to the latest versions of most other software, as well, until you're ready to buy that new computer.
Best,
