In a previous blog we covered the use of MSCONFIG to keep programs from writing to the drive during DEFRAG. There are other uses for MSCONFIG. But, what if you don't have MSCONFIG?
MSCONFIG is not native to Windows 2000, Windows 95 or NT. For Windows NT and 2000 users, MSCONFIG in the XP version will work for you. It can be downloaded at XP MSCONFIG (search forums for info on where and how to get it; this may be a job for your technician).
For those who choose to or must hang on to Windows 95, a program that can control startup programs (part of what MSCONFIG is useful for) is available at StartupCPL.
Download the file named Standalone EXE version. Unzip and install. Open Startup.exe and you are introduced to the interface for this program. Under most tabs, you will find programs named with check boxes beside them. If you want to stop any from starting for any purpose, uncheck those under their respective tabs and close the Startup program.
Reopen the Startup.exe program to recheck programs to make them start on startup. This also works under 2000 and NT if you chose to use it instead of XP MSCONFIG.
