Welcome!
Windows XP not only runs applications automatically that you may or may not see, but also services, which you are probably even less familiar with.
Here's how you can speed up your system by turning off some of these services.
Go to Start, then Run and type in services.msc. Click the Status column label until you see all the Started services at the top, for easy location of running services.
You can safely turn off the following services: Automatic Updates, Computer Browser, Error Reporting Service, Help and Support, Indexing Service, Messenger, NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing, Performance Logs and Alerts, Protected Storage, Remote Registry, Routing and Remote Access, Secondary Logon and Task Scheduler. If you know you use any of these and want to keep them, leave them alone.
You can also turn off Infrared Monitor if you don't use infrared devices. In fact, if you do a Google search or check
CastleCops you can find out what a specific service does. If you don't need it and the service has no dependencies under the Dependencies tab, you can disable it, too. Keep a list of disabled services handy in case you ever need to enable them.
You can turn them off one-by-one by right clicking on the highlighted service and then left clicking on properties, or simply double click the service. Use the drop down window to set the service to disabled. Click apply and OK. Now stop the service with the stop button. Close out of the services box when you've disabled all the services you care to.
Reboot your computer.
Best,
