Using Anti-Spam software creates more work. You have to wait while it checks your e-mail and then you have to check through what it blocked to make sure it didn't block something you actually want.
With the proper security, settings it's easier to just look through your inbox, open what you know (or believe) to be good e-mail, save and delete what you need to, and then empty out your inbox.
What are proper security settings? Well, for one thing, don't use the preview pane (Outlook Express, which most of us use).

And, as for the rest, if in doubt, don't open it, or make sure you have good, updated anti-virus protection and anti-spyware running if you have to peek.
