Welcome!
Well, you have a sound problem. Here are some steps for possible remedies under the current Windows OS, XP.
Go to Start, Settings and open the Control Panel. Open Sounds and Audio Devices. Under the Volume tab, verify the following: the Mute box is not checked, the Place volume icon … box is checked, and the slide bar for volume is far enough to the right so that you would hear sound if you had it. Click Apply, OK and close the Control Panel.
If these options were not available, double click the speaker icon bottom right of your screen next to the time. Verify that the volume control slide bar on the far left, and for any devices you use, is up and that Mute is not checked for any of these.
If that didn't do it, right click on My Computer, left on Properties, and select the Hardware tab and the Device Manager button. Note whether any items are marked with a yellow or red character like a question mark, an X or an exclamation point.
If you see any of these things, do the following. Right click the item with the character and left click on Properties. You should see information about the conflict in the window under the General tab. For items that fall under Sound, video and game controllers (click the plus sign left of that category to open it up) highlight each item and delete it. Now, restart your computer.
The computer will automatically detect and reinstall these hardware devices (drivers). If the plug and play applet asks you where the drivers are, have it look in your system CD or Sound card or other sound devices CDs. If this doesn't help, you may need to go to the manufacturer website for updated drivers, usually available for free download with install instructions.
